Post Road.
Roadwork, water infrastructure, development, and long-promised pedestrian improvements are changing North Kingstown’s main commercial corridor.
This page follows RIDOT road and sidewalk work, town water-main replacement, drainage and pedestrian upgrades, corridor development hearings, and the public documents behind each claim, without treating agenda items as approved projects.

Several projects. One corridor.
Post Road is carrying several major projects at the same time. RIDOT is rebuilding sidewalks and drainage, the town is replacing portions of the water system, and new residential projects are moving through local review. Residents and businesses should not have to search through separate agendas, state project pages, and public notices to understand what is happening. Why it matters
- Construction affects traffic, business access, and nearby neighborhoods.
- Water, drainage, sidewalks, utilities, and paving need to be coordinated.
- Development decisions made now will shape the corridor long after construction ends.
- Project costs, schedule changes, and public meetings should be easy to track.
What is happening now
Current corridor work spans state road reconstruction, town water infrastructure, and related ramp projects. Figures and schedules below come from the publisher named with each entry.
Rhode Island Department of Transportation
Post Road and West Main Street sidewalk project
RIDOT is rebuilding more than two miles of roadway along Post Road from Camp Avenue to West Main Street and along West Main Street from Post Road to Brown Street. The work includes sidewalk improvements, drainage upgrades, stormwater-treatment units, ADA ramps, pedestrian crossing signals, and roadway resurfacing. [ridot-nk-sidewalks]
- Schedule
- Winter 2025-26 through late fall 2027
- Published projected cost
- $26.7 million
RIDOT’s July 10 update reported daytime and nighttime alternating traffic between Camp Avenue and Oakdale Avenue while drainage work continued.
North Kingstown Department of Water Supply
Post Road water-main replacement
Town bid documents describe approximately 2,300 linear feet of new water main and services on Post Road and West Main Street. The work area runs from Hopedale Drive toward the Post Road and West Main Street intersection and ends near Wickford Appliance. The documents also describe coordination with RIDOT sidewalk and drainage work and Rhode Island Energy gas-main work. [water-main-bid-docstown-council-agenda-2026-03-02]
- Contract item
- The March 2, 2026 Town Council agenda listed a $1,785,590 construction award to D’Ambra Construction Company.
Agenda-listedDo not treat the agenda listing as confirmed approval unless approved minutes or the meeting recording verify the vote.
Additional water-system work
The July 13, 2026 Town Council agenda listed three related Water Department recommendations: $319,523 to connect the critical Post Road water main to the storage tank through Juniper Drive; $704,348 in construction costs for the Hopedale Drive to Cocumcussoc Way portion; and $113,334 in engineering costs for that portion. Rhode Island Department of Transportation
Route 403 and Quonset ramp construction
RIDOT’s I-95 Missing Move and Quonset ramps project includes work near Post Road, Devil’s Foot Road, Gate Road, and Route 403. RIDOT states that the new ramps are intended to provide heavy trucks and freight traffic with highway access without relying on local roads. [ridot-missing-move]
- Overall project schedule
- Winter 2025 through fall 2027
- Overall projected cost
- $144 million for the larger I-95 Missing Move and Quonset ramp project, not only the Post Road portion

Status update neededProposal · 66 residential units in one building at 7259 Post Road
The property is located in the Post Road zone and groundwater recharge overlay district.
These are proposed projects and scheduled hearings. Do not treat them as approved or guaranteed to be built. Preliminary-plan public hearing for Franklin Commons was noticed for April 21, 2026; current decision status still needs verification.
A corridor the town has been trying to change for years
Post Road has been the subject of redevelopment, sewer, pedestrian-access, business-support, and mixed-use planning efforts for years. The town has installed sewers in targeted areas and operates a façade-improvement program for eligible properties. Current roadwork and development proposals are part of that longer effort, but residents still need clear information about the costs, sequencing, public impact, and final result. [town-post-road-hubtown-sewers-developmenttown-facade-program]
What still needs answers
- Will the current project relocate utility poles that interfere with sidewalks or sit close to traffic lanes?
- How are the water, gas, drainage, sidewalk, utility, and paving schedules being coordinated?
- How will access to businesses be maintained during each construction phase?
- Have the July 13 water-project recommendations been formally approved?
- What traffic, pedestrian, drainage, and utility improvements will be required from each new development?
- How will residents receive timely notices about lane restrictions, water interruptions, and public hearings?
An older Economic Development Advisory Board report stated that utility poles were close to the travel lanes and called for cooperation between the town and National Grid. That historical report does not establish a current $3 million utility-pole project, American Rescue Plan funding, or any claim that money was redirected to a recreation center. [edab-report-utility-poles]
The state infrastructure plan identifies older Post Road water-main segments as replacement priorities. That pipe-age and material context is not a contamination or public-health claim about drinking water. [cwirp-north-kingstown]
